The Arts

At Hackham East Primary, The Arts is offered as one of the school’s specialist subjects. All students participate in and learn about the five components of the Arts ( Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Dance and Media Arts) aligned with both the Australian and the South Australian Curriculum. Classes participate in an engaging 50 minute lesson once a week where students are inspired to act, think and communicate creatively as individuals or in groups. Activities and tasks have a strong focus on developing students’ learning dispositions including self-awareness, confidence, experimentation, intercultural understanding and critical thinking.

Choir

We are a Festival of Music school and our Choir participates in the Southern Metropolitan Music Festival held in November. Students in Years 4 to 6 are welcome to join the Choir which meets once a week in lesson time with Choir trainers, Melissa Thiele and Tori Hay. In addition to the Festival concert, the Choir regularly perform at assemblies and special school events. Solo Club and Dance Choreography Club take place at lunchtimes led by the Choir trainers providing further opportunities for students to develop their talents and performance skills.

World Cultures
All classes at Hackham East Primary School participate in one 50
minute World Cultures lesson once a week, run by the school’s
Specialist language teacher. Each teaching unit is derived from the
Australian and new South Australian Curriculums and allows students
to explore and evolve their ideas around identity and belonging,
language systems and the interrelationship of language and culture.
The World Cultures space is a welcoming and safe environment
where students are able to explore not only their own cultural identity,
but to also be Respectful and Inclusive of the experiences and
feelings of others. They are able to be Learners who share, ask
meaningful questions, and discuss concepts and ideas with their
Peers.

During World Cultures lessons, students learn about new cultures and
the world through playing games, singing songs, videos and books,
and making and tasting foods. They also have opportunities to hear
and speak new languages and to develop simple written texts to show
their learning. Students have access to iPads for research, translating,
filming and presenting information. Each student is provided with their
own pretend Passport to stamp when “visiting” each country. They
also have a folder to store their written and visual work in, and this learning is taken home at the end of each semester.

HEPS students and staff enjoy an annual World Cultures Day to
celebrate and learn about different cultures around the world. Parents
are welcome to attend the morning Assembly and students and staff
are encouraged to dress up in clothing which represents their own
cultural identity and heritage.
